Etymology of 'Key'
Oxford Etymological Dictionary says the etymology of "key" is unknown, but that sounds ridiculous to me. Let me show you why. I also show you the cognates in other languages, although these are not derived from Latin clavis. Word Origins - semantics, meaning change over time (Etymology 2 of 2)
Etymology explores the origin of words - the history and development of individual words in a language. It asks a question you're likely familiar with: "where did this word come from?" The last video introduced etymology as a diachronic (historical) method that seeks to recover and build the history of words. It payed special attention to the way sounds change over time, and presented ways scholars trace a word back to its earliest retrievable form (etymon). In this video, I shift the attention to semantics. Like sound change, meaning change is a dynamic process. Consider various types of semantic change (abstract to concrete, general to specific), origins of meaning change (calques, semantic borrowings) and changes that reveal connections between meaning & use (like archaic, poetic & obsolete words). I'll cap it off with the basic conventions you'll want to notice when looking up an etymology, or follow when doing an etymology. I'll also look at common sources of etymologies (dictionaries, popular "folk etymologies" and onomastics). www.nativlang.com/linguisticsBy Added: 2011-07-18 22:41:06 | 1791 Views | 0:06:42 Keywords: etymology meaning change semantics semantic change historical linguistics words word history
Baphomet the origins and etymology including modern interpretation
Michael W. Ford discusses the origins of Baphomet from pre-Christian origins to Aleister Crowley, Luciferian Witchcraft and modern left hand path symbolism. Baphomet has a composition of many key elements in the occult traditions and is by end result a symbol of the Magus/Black Adept who is balanced with his or her Daemon (True Will).By Added: 2011-12-24 4:58:45 | 2156 Views | 0:20:17 Keywords: baphomet satanism magick lucifer
Bionic Dance & Etymology
Definition of etymology Merriam-Webster: 1: the history of a linguistic form (as a word) shown by tracing its development since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it is found, by tracing its transmission from one language to another, by yzing it into its component parts, by identifying its cognates in other languages, or by tracing it and its cognates to a common ancestral form in an ancestral language 2: a branch of linguistics concerned with etymologies There is nothing in there about constructing new words. www.merriam-webster.com This video is a response to BionicDance's video to ZOMGitsCriss www.youtube.com This is also the comment section referenced in my video. From The Online Etymology Dictionary (which is a wonderful online tool for looking at prefixes/word combinations and how they changed): "This is a map of the wheel-ruts of modern English. Etymologies are not definitions; they're explanations of what our words meant and how they sounded 600 or 2000 years ago." www.etymonline.com For instance, look at the differences between agnostic and aglow.By Added: 2011-12-21 23:39:18 | 966 Views | 0:17:10 Keywords: bionicdance zomgitscriss etymology language development concepts words

Calm Teacher Role Play 3 - Etymology
I play a teacher going over a list of words with you using flash cards. This time instead of the definitions of words, I quietly talk about the etymology (history and origin) of the words, focusing on prefixes, infixes and suffixes. I was very tired while making this and so I had to cut out two etymologies that I said something wrong about., that's why they are skipped in the video so. Etymology - sound change, roots & derivation (Etymology 1 of 2)
Etymology explores the origin of words - the history and development of individual words in a language. Etymology asks and tries to answer a familiar question: "where did this word come from?" This video introduces etymology as a diachronic (historical) method that seeks to recover and build the history of words. Attested and reconstructed word forms help us arrive at the etymon of the Modern English word "queen". Along the way, see some of the twists and turns that a word takes throughout its history as sounds change over time in a single language and as languages borrow words from each other. Topics include the importance of sound laws for situating single words within large-scale historical change and the role of derivational morphology in uncovering the background of words with affixes. www.nativlang.com/linguisticsBy Added: 2011-07-07 18:13:16 | 618 Views | 0:06:25 Keywords: etymology sound change phonology historical linguistics words word history
The etymology of fruit names?
